PRINCIPAL EDITOR Sheryl Milentis .
Published 2022.
This third chronological volume of Western Australia Exploration covers the years 1846 to 1860 when the search for resources expanded well beyond the settlements of south-western Western Australia. This long awaited volume completes the explorations of the southern portions of the state.
A new generation of Australian educated and Australian born explorers were joined by Europeans with skills in the sciences.
This companion volume to Western Australian Exploration Volume 1 1826-1835 and Western Australian Exploration 1836 – 1845 has been dedicated to the Gregory brothers who undertook many of the expeditions between Albany and Champion Bay and were instrumental in opening up the Murchison to agriculture. They improved on the exploring techniques of John Septimus Roe.
Each of the more than 60 Reports of expeditions of exploration has a synopsis including participants, departure and finish dates and places, an outline of the route, a summary of the journey, topographical map references and the archival sources reproduced from original reports, letters and diaries with extensive maps and images. The reports are complemented by expert analyses of fauna and ecology, and flora.
Short biographical notes on the participants and footnotes are included. The volume contains a brief history on the military influences in Shark Bay, sailing directions for Shark Bay and a detailed account of the spearing of Governor Fitzgerald.
The volume includes a comprehensive index of people, places, and ships with a selected general index
Chronologically this is a companion volume to Exploration Eastward 1860-1869 and Due North.
It includes earlier land explorations by Menzies (1791) and Flinders (1802) that were not included in Western Australian Exploration Volume 1 1826-1835.
